Let’s dive into the details so you can feel at ease knowing exactly what’s ahead!
What Exactly Are Dermal Fillers & How Do They Work?
Dermal fillers involve injecting a gel-like substance under the skin to create a fuller, smoother appearance. Also known as soft tissue fillers, they can help address fine lines, deep wrinkles, scars, and depressions and even help you gain a more youthful appearance.
There are several types of dermal fillers, including:
- Hyaluronic Acid: a natural sugar found in the body that can soften fine lines
- Calcium Hydroxylapatite: a mineral found in bone that can treat deep wrinkles and skin folds
- Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA): a synthetic material that is biodegradable and stimulates collagen production
- Polymethyl Methacrylate: a semi-permanent filler that is more durable than others
Dermal fillers are temporary solutions. As the body breaks down the filler, the procedure may need to be repeated to maintain results.
Our Pre-Treatment Plan for Dermal Fillers
Before receiving treatment, you will consult with our team to determine your goals and treatments. We will review what kind of fillers you need, possible side effects, and recovery time.
Please inform us of any allergies, history of bleeding or bruising after similar procedures, neurological problems, and any skin conditions you may have.
How Long Does a Filler Treatment Take?
Depending on the treatment, a typical dermal filler treatment can take as little as 15 minutes or as long as an hour.
The treatment also requires numbing the skin, which can take 15 to 30 minutes. On average, dermal filler appointments with Advanced Practice Aesthetics last an hour.
The dermal filler process involves injecting the gel substance, massaging it, and evaluating the result. If necessary, more filler will be added to the area to achieve the desired results.
How We Manage Your Pain & Discomfort
After cleaning your face, we will apply a numbing cream to help reduce some of the pain from the needle.
The needle for dermal fillers is very thin, so it can cause minor discomfort while the injections are taking place. You may also feel slightly pinching after the procedure; however, most people feel little pain during this procedure.
For lips and lip lines (Ravanesse Versa), Advanced Practice Aesthetics numbs the area for the first 30 minutes, then we perform the dermal filler treatment.
Radiesse, Bellafill, and Sculptra treatments for the cheeks, jaw, and temple do not require numbing, but we use lidocaine to ease discomfort.
Our Aftercare for Dermal Fillers
After the procedure, Advanced Practice Aesthetic providers will clean your skin and may provide an ice pack to help with swelling.
After the injections, you may experience mild bruising or discomfort, which will disappear in a few days.
Everyone is different. Some people see the results immediately, while others may take a few days to see what they’re looking for. Recovery time can differ for each individual, but healing after the injections may take a few days.
Most people can return to normal activities after dermal fillers, though your provider may suggest taking a break from rigorous exercise or physical activity for a day or two. We will provide a list of potential reactions to look out for and request that the clients contact us for any problems.
Based on each individual’s needs, clients can return in 2 weeks (lips) for another treatment or 1 to 3 months for Sculptra and Bellafill, as your provider will want to see the collagen growth.
Both of these fillers require multiple treatments to achieve optimal results. However, each client is different, so we will adjust as needed for each individual.
