Dermal fillers are a great way to smooth your skin and radiate a youthful glow. Although they do not last forever, there are ways to help your results last longer.
Advanced Practice Aesthetics has some tips to help you extend your dermal fillers so they last as long as possible. With our aftercare advice and regular treatments, you can look as youthful as you feel on the inside!
Let’s dive in.
Dermal Fillers & Your Skincare Routine
The best skincare routine after a dermal filler treatment is a gentle one!
Avoid using exfoliants or peels for at least two weeks after receiving your dermal fillers. Use a mild daily cleanser and plenty of moisturizers that contain hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or ceramide. Also, try to avoid touching your face as much as possible.
Advanced Practice Aesthetics always recommends using an SPF 50+ for everyone to maintain healthy skin, which is even more important to preserve your dermal fillers. Sunscreen is essential to your skincare routine and helps prevent sun damage and aging.
If you aren’t sure, our providers can recommend a custom skincare regimen tailored to your specific needs.
Dermal Fillers & Your Lifestyle
Another way to extend the longevity of your dermal fillers is through diet and lifestyle. Because dermal fillers break down over time, you may need touch-ups to maintain your aesthetic goals.
While it is not possible to predict how fast your body will break down dermal fillers, it has been shown that exercise and high metabolisms may cause dermal fillers to break down faster. This means that if your metabolism is fast, your dermal fillers will break down quicker than fillers in someone with a slow metabolism.
This does not mean you should try and slow your metabolism down. Keep your healthy lifestyle! This simply helps explain another factor in why some people need filler touch-ups sooner.
So, how does diet affect dermal fillers? In general, sticking to whole foods and limiting sugar can positively affect your skin. Processed foods, sugar, and alcohol increase inflammation, negatively affecting your skin’s condition. In addition, be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day.
Managing stress is also important to keeping your skin and dermal fillers looking great. Stress is bad for our bodies, causes us to age faster, creates wrinkles and breakouts, and can cause your dermal fillers to break down faster.
Dermal Fillers & Supplements
There is evidence that supplements can affect your dermal fillers.
Before receiving a dermal filler treatment, you may want to skip your daily supplements, as some ingredients, such as vitamin E, St. John’s Wort, Omega 3/Fish Oil, and medications that thin your blood, like Ibuprofen, Motrin, and similar medications, can promote more bruising.
To support your dermal fillers, you can take zinc. However, always consult with your doctor before adding supplements to your diet.
If you take regular medications, definitely talk to your doctor before starting anything new! Some supplements can interact with medications, causing adverse side effects.
Dermal Fillers: Touch-Ups
The type of dermal filler you receive determines how often you need touch-ups. Some last three to six months, while others may last up to a year or two.
As we mentioned, your body’s metabolism will affect your dermal fillers, so it’s best to stay in contact with your prescriber to monitor your results. They can help you determine when you need a follow-up treatment.
Each type of dermal filler injection has different results and follow-up recommendations. At Advanced Practice Aesthetics, we use four different fillers for different purposes, so let’s examine how these four types differ.
Radiesse
With Radiesse injections, you will start seeing results immediately after the injection, as it provides instant volume. The full effects of Radiesse improve over time as it stimulates your natural collagen production.
Most clients see optimal results within one to two weeks and can continue to see improvement over several months as the collagen builds. Radiesse results can last for 12 to 18 months, depending on the treatment area and your individual metabolism.
If you really want to build your results, you can return for another injection after two to four weeks.
Bellafill
Bellafill is a long-lasting filler, and its results can last up to five years for many patients. It stimulates collagen production and provides immediate volume, which means you may not need frequent touch-ups.
If you want maintenance treatments, we recommend you wait every one to two years to keep optimal results. You can always come back for periodic evaluations to determine the best maintenance schedule for your individual needs.
If you want an additional treatment, you can return within one to three months to build on your results.
Revanesse Versa
Revanesse Versa typically lasts six to 12 months, depending on the treatment area and your metabolism. To maintain your Revanesse Versa fillers, we recommend you return for touch-ups around the six-to-nine-month mark.
If you want to maintain your results consistently, we recommend scheduling follow-up appointments as soon as you notice a reduction in volume or the effects, or at least every year. This helps to ensure the look you want remains consistent without large gaps in treatment.
You can return for additional treatments of Revanesse Versa at least two weeks after the swelling subsides.
Sculptra
Sculptra works differently than the other dermal filler options, stimulating the body’s collagen production over time. You won’t see immediate results but incremental improvements over several months.
For maintenance, follow-up treatments are recommended every two to three years. The collagen boost from Sculptra lasts longer, with results commonly lasting up to two years or more after a series of initial treatments.
Maintenance can be scheduled based on how your skin responds and your aesthetic goals, or at least one to three months after your initial injection to build on your results.
